Should Ford Bring the Ka to the U.S.? Ford's CEO Wants To...

2009_ford_ka_purple_new.jpg
Ford recently unveiled the all-new Ka subcompact in Europe. Last month Ford's CEO told reporters that the automaker is re-thinking the idea of bringing the small car to the U.S.

Ford has made a commitment to small cars in the U.S. with its upcoming Fiesta and new Focus. The Ka is smaller than the Fiesta. Mulally recently told the Automotive News that the Ka might eventually be sold on our shores, but that Ford needs to figure out a way to make a profit on it.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Unveiled: Guys, Seriously, This Isn’t The 10th Grade, Stop Copying Each Others Homework

Apparently hoping to duplicate Ford’s success in the compact car market, Chevrolet has revealed their own craptacular version of the Ford Fiesta global-design frame: the new Chevrolet Cruze. Slated to replace the Chevrolet Cobalt in the U.S. in 2011, the Chevrolet Cruze will make its official debut on the road in March of 2009 when it’s released in the European market. The 2010 European Cruze will be offered with 3 different engines, either a 112-hp 1.L, 140-hp 1.8L, or a 150-hp 2.0L turbodiesel. When it hits the United Sates in 2010 as a 2011 model, the Cruze will most likely feature similar specifications.

According to Chevrolet, the Cruze compact car is based on the Delta 2 platform and will serve as the flagship model for Chevrolet’s “Global Compact Vehicle” Architecture. Using the “Global Delta” platform, Chevrolet plans to eventually release 15 cars worldwide, a marketing plan that very closely resembles Ford’s “Global Ford” program.

A Ford dealership in Athens, Greece is destroyed over the weekend during the country's outbreak of rioting. We wouldn't blame you for thinking this was a way for US-based dealers to get out of their floorplan loans. Hat tip to 57SweptSide!

If automakers get a bailout, should NASCAR die?

A columnist over at Slate.com is recommending -- and not lightly, he wants you to know -- that with the domestic automakers enduring "Detroit's version of The Troubles," now would be a good time to "euthanize" NASCAR. He makes a long argument, but the crux of it is simple: if the domestics get a heap of money from the government, should that money really be used to sponsor a specialized race series that arguably doesn't have the national pull or the return it once did? His supporting arguments are sometimes disingenuous and occasionally slightly off-base, but the question is worth considering. If the public loans money to the automakers, who decides where that money is spent? Yet, if Ford, GM, and Chrysler were to do the same thing to NASCAR that Honda, Suzuki, Audi, and Subaru have been doing, well... that would leave NASCAR as a one-make series featuring, ta-da, Toyota. And wouldn't that be something to see? Thanks for the tip, Josh!

Ford Fiesta Sedan, Revealed [Ford Fiesta Sedan]

UPDATE: We've now got live shots of the Fiesta! Photos and details of the Ford Fiesta sedan were officially released this morning at the major auto show occurring right now. That's right, the Guangzhou International Auto Show. What? Did you think we meant the LA Auto Show? The 2010 Ford Fiesta sedan follows the 2009 Ford Fiesta hatchback that debuted last year in China. The sedan, incorporating Ford's kinetic design language, is an important vehicle globally for Ford, with plans to begin production in Mexico for the North American market next year. For once, Europe will not be getting one of Ford's awesome small cars before us. Instead, they'll be stuck with the hatchback. Suck it Europe. Press release below the jump.

Ford Stages Global Reveal of All-New Fiesta Sedan in China

* All-new Fiesta sedan features Ford's signature kinetic design language; its exterior clearly inspired by the Verve Concept notchback revealed last year at the Guangzhou Auto Show

* Sedan version of all-new Fiesta developed specifically for China with key feature inputs taken from local market research

* China to be a significant market for all-new Fiesta sedan, as Ford confirms its leadership with the fuel-efficient, sophisticated small car

* Production of all-new Fiesta sedan will begin Q1 2009 at new, state-of-the-art facility in Nanjing, China

GUANGZHOU, China, November 18, 2008 – Ford today staged the global reveal of its all-new Fiesta four-door sedan at the Guangzhou Auto Show, delivering in full on the bold promise made by the Verve Concept notchback last year.

The dynamic all-new Fiesta sedan features Ford's signature kinetic design elements – introduced to China first on the exciting Fiesta five-door hatchback at Auto China in Beijing in April – demonstrating the versatility of this unique design language and its consumer appeal in important global markets.

“We set out to design a truly exciting, desirable small car that exceeds all expectations. Today, we are keeping our promise that was made with the Verve Concept notchback last year,” said Chelsia Lau, chief designer of China/ASEAN Programs, Ford Motor Company. “The all-new Fiesta sedan is sleek and contemporary. The interpretation of kinetic design on the four-door body has given the Fiesta sedan an independent identity while retaining the emotional appeal of its five-door sibling. ”

The Ford Fiesta sedan will be launched in China within months of its global reveal. It will be built at Ford's new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Nanjing.

“This Fiesta writes the next chapter in our small car success story and builds on the widespread appeal of the Ford brand in China. Style-aware Chinese consumers will appreciate the uniqueness of this car that expresses their individuality, style and aspirations,” said Robert Graziano, president and CEO, Ford Motor China.

The Fiesta sedan will be manufactured in China using the same advanced technologies as does its European counterpart. The body structure is manufactured with extensive use of high- and ultra high-strength steels to significantly increase strength and rigidity, while also reducing weight and improving fuel efficiency. These advanced steels also provide Fiesta with an increased measure of occupant protection.

The Ford Fiesta revealed today has been tailored to satisfy customer wants in China. Carrying out Fiesta's global strategy, additional variations of the all-new Fiesta sedan will be available across Asia and North America from 2010 with production from Thailand and Mexico supplying these important markets. However, Fiesta sedan will not be distributed in Europe.

“Launching the all-new Fiesta sedan to the world in China signals the importance of China and the Asian region in Ford’s global strategy, ” said John Parker, executive vice president, Asia Pacific and Africa, Ford Motor Company. “This is a sophisticated small car. Design combines with advanced technology to deliver very high levels of refinement, safety and class-leading fuel efficiency. This new Fiesta proves Ford's leadership in small car design and development."

1960 Ford Pickup [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Since it's DOTS Truck Monday, let's have an old Ford! I found this '60 parked just across the street from the '70 Dodge Challenger and the '57 Cadillac, and it's one sharp-looking work truck.

This truck is clearly a work truck, one of several associated with a Victorian under serious renovation, but it also appears to be in mid-restoration. Let's hope it doesn't stop going to work once it's fixed up.

Check out this beautiful dash layout, with its Space Age decorative touches! The column-shift manual! I'm pretty sure this is an F-100, but the body emblems appear to have been removed for the new paint job.

1967 Ford Galaxie 500 [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Big 1960s Fords are always welcome here, and we've seen a couple on the Alameda street prior to today (a '65 Country Squire and a '67 XL). Now I've spotted another '67, and it's parked right in front of a DOTS favorite: the Hot Dog Stand VW Bus!

I spent a lot of my early childhood squabbling with my sisters- no seat belts, never mind child seats- in the back seat of this '67 Ford Custom, which had the extra-cool three-on-the-floor manual transmission, with overdrive. For this reason, I have a real soft spot for these cars, AM radio, terrifying handling and all.

It seems likely that the Ketchup Und Mustard Transporter's owner also owns this car; once you've gone smog-check-free, it's hard to buy anything that must take the dreaded dyno test.
