Mercedes to open 175 AMG Performance Centers worldwide

In case there was any doubt that demand for big-displacement, high-output machines continues unabated in the face of calls for environmentally-conscious hybrids and a faltering global economy, Mercedes has announced an ambitious expansion of its AMG performance division. Over the course of the next year, AMG will open a whopping 175 new "performance centers" catering to power-mad consumers around the world.

The new outlets will allow an increased level of involvement for AMG customers as Mercedes moves to distinguish the tuning house's offerings as their own brand. Each outlet will be outfitted with matching décor and whatnot, but more importantly, will offer customers a direct line to AMG's performance Mecca in Affalterbach, Germany, and act as a local home base for the AMG Performance Roadshow. The expansion will focus on 15 key markets, including the United States, Japan, China, and of course, its home market of Germany. As if customers needed any more coercion to fall for a fire-breathing Teutonic masterpiece of engineering. Hit the jump for the details.

Lost Independent Dealerships from Montana to Philly

Johnston Pierce-Arrow, Philadelphia, PA

We’ve had a variety of independent dealership photos and memorabilia come through our inboxes lately, starting with this 1933 publicity photo that Pierce-Arrow Society member Steve Rossi sent in to The Arrow, the society’s newsletter. The photo depicts a vintage Pierce Stanhope face-to-face with a contemporary four-door sedan in front of the Johnston Pierce-Arrow showroom in Philadelphia. Roger Sherman, the editor of The Arrow, said he believes the showroom was located at 1515 North Broad Street. The odd-numbered side of the street seems to be under construction, though a few similar art deco-ish buildings still stand on the even-numbered side of the street.

BTW, Roger forwarded us several other Pierce showroom addresses, which we’ll investigate in an upcoming blog post.

Gene Meador Packard, San Antonio, TX

Moving on to another of the three Ps, David Bush left a comment in our Lost Packard Dealerships post letting us know that the Gene Meador Packard building still stands at 1123 North Main in San Antonio, Texas. It’s apparently now a multi-use office building, with a couple health-care offices, a management company and a staffing company.

Studebaker Building, Missoula, Montana

A company that at different points in its existence was allied with both Packard and Pierce-Arrow was Studebaker, and Hugo90 snapped a pic of the Studebaker Building in Missoula, Montana, located at 216 West Main Street. It’s apparently now home to a barber shop, salon, senior services office and layers’ offices, and it’s also apparently on the National Register of Historic Places, though the NRHP records on the building have yet to be digitized.

Creegan AMC, North Wales, PA

Blog reader Mikel Smithson was recently going through his stuff and came across the dealer tag that was on his 1972 Gremlin, purchased new from Creegan AMC in North Wales, Pennsylvania. The 1983 AMC dealer list doesn’t show a Creegan or a dealership in North Wales. Havekost’s Nash dealership listing does show a Dodson’s in North Wales, located at Walnut and Center streets. No idea if Dodson’s was connected with Creegan; likely not.

West Side Bobbi-Kar, Winsted, CTFinally, Kit Foster sent us a scan of the 1947 Winsted, Connecticut, phone book. Vintage phone books are a great way to research old dealerships, and Kit found an ad for West Side Motors, an authorized Bobbi-Kar dealer. As you’ll recall from a previous SIA Flashback, Bobbi-Kar eventually became Keller, and there were about 800 Bobbi-Kar dealers signed up. “Does anyone else have any evidence of a Bobbi-Kar dealer?” Kit asks. As for West Side Motors, its location at 922 Main Street in Winsted now seems to be the site of a funeral home.

Rocketfire Shoebox

I spent a lot of time in Salina this weekend just sitting and thinking… Thinking about line, proportion, style, and what makes a custom work to my own sensibilities. Riding along in Lee Pratt’s shoebox Ford, staring at El Jefe’s Gary Howard built Cad, and just generally hanging out with the crew that I was with put my mind in a tailspin of sorts. It’s hard to explain really, but there is something really interesting about matching a builder’s personality to the cars they build.

Anyway, as my mind wondered and I became more and more frustrated with the matching game, I remembered an illustration that appeared in R&C sometime in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s. I looked and looked for that very magazine this morning and came up with nothing. Then, I browsed through my digital archive and found what I was looking for. I didn’t have the article that it appeared in, but I did have the illustration. It was signed by a guy named R.F. “Rex” Reyes.

From what I’ve been able to find, Rex wasn’t a car guy really. He was an industrial designer for a number of aircraft manufacturers and later in life gained fame in his field for rocket and missile design. He designed for speed and form just happened to follow. In any case, I’m guessing it was his background that interested R&C and their curiosity must have prompted them to see what they could get out of Rex.

The above illustration is what they got. To me, it’s amazing. Here’s a designer with little to no experience in the “custom world” and yet when he put pen to paper he came up with a car that would fit the scene like a glove. A shoebox Ford with an ever-so-slight section, ‘56 Chrysler rear quarters, sliced ‘57 Cad rear bumper, ‘55 Pontiac (I think?) side trim, Imperial headlight brows, etc… It’s an incredibly radical custom, but it has such a simple shape. It’s subtle… somehow… like a rocket.

And that would make sense, right? Rockets are what Rex knew and loved.

………….

Note: If anyone knows what issue of Rod & Custom this illustration came out of, I would love to hear from you.

Cutting room floor: Mazda3 sedan designs that didn't make it

Click above for high-res image gallery of unused Mazda3 designs

It takes a lot of time and effort to redesign any vehicle, but the problem is magnified when the model in question is an automaker's best-seller. So it's not surprising that Mazda would have a number of unused concepts left over from the team tasked with updating the popular Mazda3 compact. What's more intriguing, however, is just how good some of these unused sketches are. For instance, while we like the overall design of the new '3, take a look at this alternate front face - meaner and more aggressive than the propitious look of the final car.

Not only is a critical eye necessary to be a designer, it also requires a desire to get your hands dirty at times. Full-size clay models need to be shaped and refined in wind tunnels before getting final approval, and the new car needs to at least share a passing resemblance to its predecessor. See the whole process through which Mazda designers trudged in our gallery below.

Will Chrysler’s Lifetime Powertrain Warranty be too Tempting to Pass Up?

Chrysler_logo

Chrysler has announced that they will be offering a Lifetime Warranty on the powertrains of nearly all the products they own. Some stipulations and conditions apply to the warranty but it still is a very bold move by a company in transition. It almost seems as though Chrysler is the debutant of the Automotive Industry as they are constantly doing something to gain headlines.

The new Lifetime Warranty covers the engine, transmission and drive system for all parts and labor for the lifetime that the buyer owns the car. The powertrain warranty does not transfer when the original buyers sells or trades their car, but that does not takeaway from the giant leap they are taking with the offer. A leap that no other auto manufacturer has dared. While Hyundai has a 10 yr/100,000 mile warranty, the Chrysler warranty (assuming you are someone who can hold onto a car this long) will last its owner from 10 years, 1 day to a lifetime beyond the Hyundai warranty.

The Lifetime Powertrain Warranty covers all three brands consisting of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep.

To read more about Chrysler’s official release that details the Lifetime Powertrain Warranty pay a visit to WindingRoad. You will also see new ads popping up on TV already as Jeep commercials are already in rotation.
