2010 Porsche 911 GT3 Officially Unveiled

Porsche has officially unveiled the 2010 911 GT3 that will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The 911 GT3 is powered by a 3.8L naturally-aspirated six-cylinder that puts out 435 horsepower, which is up 20. The increased horsepower and mid-range torque help the GT3 reach 0-62 mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 194 mph.

For the first time ever the 911 GT3 comes with a variant of PSM Porsche Stability Management, which offers the driver the option to deactivate the stability and traction control. Both systems will not turn back on either, until the driver decides to do so, even in the most extreme conditions.

The 2010 911 GT3 will be available in U.S. showrooms this October with a starting price of $112,000.

French Hooligans Burn 1,147 Cars To Celebrate New Year [News]

Sacré bleu! The French Interior Ministry is reporting the country's emerging New Year's Eve pastime of burning cars for fun has resulted in 1,147 torched automobiles, up 30.64% from last year.

Police arrested 288 people during the "festivities," a number also up from last year's 259 arrests. As a result of his 35,000-strong nationwide police force being incapable of maintaining order, model-marrying French President Nicolas Sarkozy is suggesting those minors convicted of setting cars on fire be stripped of their licenses until they pay back the damages caused by their actions. Since most of these people are youths and France has a pretty strong public transit system, we're assuming this plan will have a huge impact on next year's shenanigans. Video: Chevy Volt Hits The Track, Impresses The Hell Out Of Us

After bombarding the media with an overflow of official press images, video footage of the production Chevy Volt hitting the streets has finally found its way to the web. Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” musical accompaniment notwithstanding, actually seeing the Chevy Volt in motion effectively quieted all the bitching and moaning we’ve done about the Volt’s unimpressive design.

Video footage after the jump

Despite the fact that I doubt it ever peaked past 45mph, watching the Chevy Volt complete a lap on the track was, as corny as this may sound, a very humbling experience. Yes, we’ve read GM the riot act a countless number of times for the numerous discrepancies between the concept and production model Volts, but at the end of the day, we respectfully remove our hats in your presence, GM - 100 years and still firmly planted on the forefront of engineering.

Rumors are False... Suzuki Kizashi is Not Dead

suzuki_kizashi_3_concept_new2.jpg
Earlier this week reports surfaced that Suzuki had killed the Kizashi midsize sedan that was supposed to be released later this year. Now Suzuki has answered those reports by stating that they are false.

“The production version will debut at this year’s New York auto show in April,” Jeff Holland, spokesman for American Suzuki Motor Corp., told Automotive News.

The car and all its official details will be unveiled at that time.

At least one of the vehicles that were rumored to being killed is untrue. Now if only those reports that came out yesterday from Honda were only untrue as well...

It was already reported that Honda has killed the next-gen Acura NSX, but it looks like the economic downturn is causing Honda to cut even more programs.

Autocar is now reporting that in addition to the death of the NSX, Honda has also killed the next-gen S2000. 2009 is reportedly going to be the last model year for the S2000 with no replacement in the works. Scuderia Ferrari to bring back troubled pit-lane traffic lights system

Sometimes the best approach is the simplest, but that kind of attitude doesn't always fly in the high-tech haven that is Ferrari's headquarters in Maranello. Traditionally, one pit crew member would stand beside a Formula One car in the pit lane box holding a small sign on a long shaft to signal the driver when it was safe to drive out, but Scuderia Ferrari tried last year to replace the "lollipop" sign with an electronic system. A small box with lights, controlled by computer, was implemented in an effort to streamline the process. Unfortunately, the progress proved anything but, and the system caused several costly errors this past season, culminating in the inaugural nighttime Singapore GP, where Felipe Massa was signaled to leave the pit before the refueling hose was detached. With his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen waiting behind, Massa drove off, dragging the fuel line - and a crew member -along with him.

The incident cost the Massa and Ferrari dearly, and they ended up losing out on the Drivers' Title. The electronic system was subsequently abandoned and in favor of the simpler lollipop. Undeterred and determined to get it right, however, Ferrari reckon they've learned from their mistakes. During the off-season, they have been hard at work on the system and are planning on bringing it back for the 2009 championship. For the sake of the entire team - especially the guy who has the precarious job of holding the fuel nozzle - we hope they've got it right this time.

Squirrels Of Fury Scirocco Ventilates Engine Block, Goes Out In Blaze Of Glory [24 Hours Of Lemons]

We're in the final hour of racing here at Thunderhill, and we can't say who the favorite is at this point. What we can tell you is that oil-coated VWs burn really well.

Here's the scene under the hood of the Squirrels Of Fury car. Oh sure, you've seen LeMons cars with holes in the engine block before, but the Squirrels take it to a new level...

Yes, that's a flashlight shining all the way through the block. The car had been leaking oil for quite a while, so the engine compartment and underside were thoroughly coated. When Mr. Connecting Rod finally decided he'd had enough, the resulting blast of hot flying metal and combustion gases set the oil alight.

Many thanks to Zandr Milewski of Team Dead Smurfs for the unspeakably amazing burning-VW photographs!

An Ode To Pickup Trucks In A Post-SUV World [Carpocalypse Now]

Despite lower gas prices in November, demand for SUVs has faded while sales of pickup trucks have rebounded strongly. Somehow, the spike in gas prices didn’t make pickup trucks uncool. Why? Utility.

Thanks to the huge spike in the price at the pump in the first half of the year, SUV sales are down more than 40% in 2008 from 2007. In response, the not-so-Big Three have closed many plants dedicated to making SUVs, a product that has come to symbolize their perceived inability to produce the vehicles American consumers want to buy.

Writing on his New York Times "Freakonomics" blog, Steven D. Levitt asks the question:

“The apparent cause of death for SUV’s was high gas prices. Doesn’t that mean that with low gas prices SUV sales should come back to life?”

Levitt goes on to suggest the reason SUV sales haven’t recovered is both a fear gas prices will rebound as well as a belief: “When gas prices got high, it became uncool to own an SUV.”

The SUV may be dead, but the humble pickup truck doesn’t appear to be suffering the same fate — because, for many buyers, trucks aren’t a fad, they’re actually a useful vehicle.

Keep in mind that in the current market problem of a lack of credit is being seen across the board — sales are down for every single vehicle in the marketplace. So the way to determine sales strength at the moment is to peg one vehicle's sales drop to another. So, while sales of the historically top-selling Ford F-Series pickup are down 25.4% for the first 11 months of 2008 compared to the same time period in 2007, they’re only down 18.4% when comparing November, 2008 to November, 2007. That's a lower drop in sales than that seen by the Toyota Camry, down 5.3% over the first 11 months of the year, but down 28.7% during the this past month.

So what does that potentially tell us? It would seem possible that the recovery in sales can be pegged to gas prices; as the economy collapsed in October, gas prices fell and consequently, pickup truck sales began to increase, and the sales of mid-size econo-sedans dropped. But, what we're also seeing is while some SUVs have recovered sales, for the most part, they haven't quite followed that same number, and appear to be continuing their decline.

Indeed, that trend can be tracked across other popular pickups and cars. The Chevy Silverado was only down 22.5% November to November while the Honda Accord was down 38.1% and the fuel-efficient Toyota Prius fell a staggering 48.3%.

What does this all mean? It appears that while people do stop buying pickups when gas prices spike, they’re more resilient long term than SUVs because they’re more useful. When gas prices drop, it looks like Americans still want to buy bigger vehicles, but now, they demand actually utility from their trucks, either by necessity or fashion.

The larger picture? Throughout the whole Carpocalypse, American automakers have always been building the vehicles Americans wanted to buy, it’s just they weren’t building the vehicles Americans thought they could afford to own.

New Chinese-market Hyundai Sonata revealed

Click above for image gallery of the Beijing Hyundai Sonata

Apparently the looks of the Hyundai Sonata were deemed not bold enough for the Chinese market, so Beijing Hyundai has made some adaptations for the local market. What is being called the Hyundai Ling Xiang or Sonata NFC is based on the same car that we get over here. However, the Chinese have given the car a nose job and new tail-lights to make it stand out more. Unfortunately, as Michael Jackson has proven conclusively, rhinoplasty does not necessarily make you stand out in a good way. While no one would describe the current gen Sonata as exciting, this grille surround just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the car. At the back, a new trunklid provides slightly different tail-lights. A new rear seat is claimed to be more comfortable, as well. Next year the Chinese operation will reportedly develop a larger D-segment sedan based on the new Sonata that will debut at this fall's LA Auto Show. Hat tip to reader Joe.
