An Ode To Pickup Trucks In A Post-SUV World [Carpocalypse Now]

Despite lower gas prices in November, demand for SUVs has faded while sales of pickup trucks have rebounded strongly. Somehow, the spike in gas prices didn’t make pickup trucks uncool. Why? Utility.

Thanks to the huge spike in the price at the pump in the first half of the year, SUV sales are down more than 40% in 2008 from 2007. In response, the not-so-Big Three have closed many plants dedicated to making SUVs, a product that has come to symbolize their perceived inability to produce the vehicles American consumers want to buy.

Writing on his New York Times "Freakonomics" blog, Steven D. Levitt asks the question:

“The apparent cause of death for SUV’s was high gas prices. Doesn’t that mean that with low gas prices SUV sales should come back to life?”

Levitt goes on to suggest the reason SUV sales haven’t recovered is both a fear gas prices will rebound as well as a belief: “When gas prices got high, it became uncool to own an SUV.”

The SUV may be dead, but the humble pickup truck doesn’t appear to be suffering the same fate — because, for many buyers, trucks aren’t a fad, they’re actually a useful vehicle.

Keep in mind that in the current market problem of a lack of credit is being seen across the board — sales are down for every single vehicle in the marketplace. So the way to determine sales strength at the moment is to peg one vehicle's sales drop to another. So, while sales of the historically top-selling Ford F-Series pickup are down 25.4% for the first 11 months of 2008 compared to the same time period in 2007, they’re only down 18.4% when comparing November, 2008 to November, 2007. That's a lower drop in sales than that seen by the Toyota Camry, down 5.3% over the first 11 months of the year, but down 28.7% during the this past month.

So what does that potentially tell us? It would seem possible that the recovery in sales can be pegged to gas prices; as the economy collapsed in October, gas prices fell and consequently, pickup truck sales began to increase, and the sales of mid-size econo-sedans dropped. But, what we're also seeing is while some SUVs have recovered sales, for the most part, they haven't quite followed that same number, and appear to be continuing their decline.

Indeed, that trend can be tracked across other popular pickups and cars. The Chevy Silverado was only down 22.5% November to November while the Honda Accord was down 38.1% and the fuel-efficient Toyota Prius fell a staggering 48.3%.

What does this all mean? It appears that while people do stop buying pickups when gas prices spike, they’re more resilient long term than SUVs because they’re more useful. When gas prices drop, it looks like Americans still want to buy bigger vehicles, but now, they demand actually utility from their trucks, either by necessity or fashion.

The larger picture? Throughout the whole Carpocalypse, American automakers have always been building the vehicles Americans wanted to buy, it’s just they weren’t building the vehicles Americans thought they could afford to own.

Steam-Powered Car Land Speed Record Test Successful [Racing News]

It seems like the team of British speed freaks aiming at one of the oldest land speed records on the books is one step closer after successfully testing their steam-powered speedster.

On a low speed run, Don Wales, grandson of speed record legend Sir Malcolm Campbell tested it's LPG fired mini-boilers and 360 HP Curtis turbine engine, even testing the automatic shut down systems with great success.

The record-breaking run is planned for next summer and the team is working to secure the dry lake bed at Edwards Air Force base to make their attempt. The previous FIA-recognized steam-powered land-speed record is 127.66 mph, set in 1906 (the unofficial version is 145.607 MPH) and in June the team was aiming at 150 MPH to break the record, but now apparently they're more confident and have set their sights on a whopping 170 MPH. With steam! That baby's blowing a lot of hot air (and water vapor). [Telegraph]

Smashed San Francisco Civic Owners Tell Story Of Incredibly Bad Luck [Offbeat News]

Remember the bewildering story of the smashed Honda Civic with an "AIDS note" in San Francisco? Turns out it was true. But there's more. Check out the back story and new pictures below.

To update you on the original story of the note claiming an AIDS-infected suicide jumper, let's start with the car owners. Seems the car is owned by couple Mark and Lina who have had one hell of a couple months, starting with the Honda getting broken into in September, a motorcycle getting stolen in October, the Civic getting crushed by a suicidal, drunken AIDS-infected naked guy and insurance covering none of it. The whole terrible story, along with the timeline are below the gallery.

Mark and Lina’s Story – A Bad Couple of Months

Timeline:

September 13, 2008: Mark’s Honda Civic get broken into in Hayes Valley, San Francisco, and the same weekend, two upstairs apartment units get broken into through an open window.

October 10, 2008: Mark’s Triumph motorcycle gets stolen from Hayes and Buchanan.

October 24, 2008: License plates from said Triumph are recovered in Tenderloin, San Francisco by SFPD. Both the in the car pulled over by SFPD are on parole for auto theft and get arrested for possessing stolen motorcycle plates.

November 14, 2008: Mark’s Honda Civic gets crushed by a guy attempting suicide by jumping off the top of their building.

December 3, 2008: Triumph motorcycle is found by CHP in Hayward, completely trashed, being held together by bungee cords and is totally unsalvageable.

Lina’s statement:

“We’d had a couple of stressful months relative to cars and motorcycles, with the break-in of our car, the break-ins in our apartment building , and then Mark’s bike being stolen. Needless to say when we walked to our car to drive to a friend’s birthday dinner on Saturday the 14th, we thought someone was playing a joke on us. When we walked up, there was glass so far away from the car, we thought ‘Oh my God, did someone break into our car again? For what!? The stereo’s already gone!’

Getting closer, it looked like just a lot of glass. When we got to the car, we realized it wasn’t just a break-in – then we saw the hood and the now infamous note from our neighbor. We stood there in shock for a few minutes, and then a couple came out of 600 Fell St. and said ‘Holy crap dude, is this your car?” We just sort of nodded in silence.

The tenant went on to tell us what happened: The man on the 6th floor who jumped, and yes, who has AIDS, was not altogether sober, and this wasn’t the first time he’d attempted suicide. He had jumped off his 6th floor balcony (about 80 feet up) and went through the electrical wires, spraying sparks everywhere, and then landed on our car. The wires broke his initial fall, and then of course he hit the hood. And yes, he was naked. Supposedly, he got off the car by himself and pulled himself to the curb, then passed out. The last news we heard was that he’s in an induced coma.

So, about the notes: there were two on our car when we got there, one which was a police report with an incident number – I filled out the report and sent it in but haven’t heard back yet – and the other, hand-written one, was from our building manager. The car was left on the street from Saturday, when we found it, until Monday morning, when it was towed.

We had the car towed, got some estimates to fix it and of course the damage was way more than the value of the car. We talked to our insurance company, which wouldn’t cover anything. My husband didn’t have theft insurance on the motorcycle to boot, so we’re basically S.O.L.

We ended up calling our local news-talk radio station, KGO-AM, to speak with their on-air lawyer Len Tillem about our legal options. He said that Mark was out of luck unless our insurance covered people falling out of the sky (or something to that effect), that the building can’t be held liable and that our insurance policy doesn’t cover it. The guy who jumped, no one has been able to figure out whether he’s got insurance coverage, and he’s in a medically-induced coma with no family around.

To add insult to injury, when the CHP found the motorcyle, it was towed to a scrap yard in Hayward. It was a total wreck – looked like it had been dropped on either side, parts missing and other parts being held together by bungee cords, so obviously driving was out of the question, as was repairing it. So, we made the decision just to let it go. The real clincher was that we had to pay $370 for the towing fee, storage fee and disposal fee. It’d have been better for us if CHP just hadn’t found it!

So, that’s our story for all the people who’ve wanted some answers. We certainly feel terrible for the person who jumped off of their balcony, and all things considered, we’re blessed in our lives. Here’s hoping that Hayes Valley becomes more secure. We love the area, but the last couple of months have been trying to say the least!

(Thanks for the update Shane)

Inside The RENNTech GLK350 SPEC.R HYBRID Rally-Inspired SEMA Racer [Sema]

There's something a little insane about getting handed a Mercedes-Benz GLK hybrid for a SEMA build and, instead of creating a lowered and overly-painted custom, trying to duplicate a Pike's Peak Unlimited Class rally racer. But it's that insanity that has always made RENNTech one of the most entertaining tuning shops out there. Below we take the first look at the build and the specs for the RENNTech Rally GLK Hybrid, debuting later this week.

About The Build With RENNTech's Jo A. Borras

The Rally racer is obviously a bit lighter than the standard GLK, and makes use of high-performance components, including long-tube headers, composite airbox/intake, and RENNtech's own ECU software. We've added larger RENNtech brakes and a redesigned performance suspension system to help the GLK attack corners. Additionally, the hybrid drive should give an additional torque boost at the kind of low-speeds a rally car might find on a tight, demanding course.

With the hybrid Rally car, we were trying to sharpen the car's reflexes and really give it a more aggressive, sporting look. Obviously this is not a car that is going to take on the unlimited class of 1000 hp cars, but it will be enough to be powerful and exciting - along the lines of a Subaru or Mitsubishi Evo - and it will accomplish that while being somewhat greener than the original version, which is the opposite of what people might expect.

The public will very likely see THIS car, as we're trying to organize a few exhibition drives within the Formula D series. Without actually doing the tests, anything we would tell you would be dreaming. We're confident of a sub 6-second 0-60, putting the car into similar territory with the other rally replicas out there.

Wheels are RENNtech's own lightweight 20" 3 pc. wheels in a matte finish - brakes are RENNtech's own recipe 16.2" front 2 pc. rotors with 8 piston calipers. Nitto is providing the tires. The rollcage will stiffen up the chassis to some degree, but the big change is the suspension itself, which has been replaced with a custom unit that allows adjustments in ride height, damping, camber, rake, etc.

Most of the modifications [to the exterior] were made to fit the larger wheels and widen the track. The front splitter and rear diffuser, as well as lower side skirts, a very functional aerodynamically, and help direct airflow underneath the GLK with the goal of reducing overall drag and improving aerodynamic downforce. With the interior, we have eliminated most of the sound insulation and replaced the heavy Mercedes-Benz seats with much lighter carbon/kevlar buckets, which helped save some weight. We also did a full rollcage.
