BBC responds to Tesla's Top Gear complaints

Click the image above to watch Top Gear's review of the Tesla Roadster after the jump

We've been following the roller-coaster ride that Top Gear's recent test of the Tesla Roadster has turned into with interest. Since Clarkson's video review first aired, reactions to the way the Tesla was presented have been mixed, and much of the debate has centered on one particular scene where the Top Gear crew can be seen pushing one of their Tesla test-cars into the garage after apparently running out of juice... except that it never happened. The BBC has released a statement admitting that Clarkson's tester still had power left and the scene was filmed to show what would happen if the battery had actually been depleted. Regardless, "Top Gear stands by the findings in this film and is content that it offers a fair representation of the Tesla's performance on the day it was tested."

So far, we've heard no word on whether offering "a fair representation" includes future reviews of petrol-powered cars that include scenes of each one being pushed into the garage after not running out of gas. Thanks for the tip, Doug!

Richard Hammond's Ferrari 550 Up For Sale [Top Gear]

Looks like Top Gear co-host Richard Hammond has decided to part with one of his cars, in this case a 1997 Ferrari 550 with just 49,000 miles on the clock. Despite the fact this supercar was owned first by EVO magazine before falling into the hands of Hammond, the advertisement states the 550 has "had every care possible by Maranello to keep it pristine." Hammond's Ferrari is the requisite red with black interior and has a proper manual gearbox, but with right-hand drive, US buyers need not apply, even at the asking price of about $66,200. Help Convince The BBC To Broadcast Top Gear In HD

As you may or may not know, except for one special occasion, Top Gear is currently not filmed (at least for the large part) or aired in HD. However that could change with your help.

Recently the BBC’s head of HD for one of their production companies posted on the BBC Internet Blog asking for feedback on why you’d like to see Top Gear in HD:

I know that many of you are frequently frustrated about the programmes not in HD. Along with the sports events we don’t currently screen, you often raise Top Gear as a show you believe would benefit from being in HD.

I wanted to ask you:

What it is about Top Gear that means you really want to watch it in HD?

What are the qualities which you identify as particularly suitable for HD?

Can you let me know – ideally in one short sentence – either through comments here or by emailing me at danielle.nagler@bbc.co.uk? I want to understand what you see in SD shows that you believe gives them added value in HD, not least because it is really helpful in evaluating new HD programme opportunities that cross my desk.

So if you’re a BBC license holder (i.e. a UK resident) and would like to see Top Gear aired in HD, please consider posting in the comments area of that blog or by e-mailing her directly. However as I pointed out by bolding a bit of her post, please keep it short. I doubt she wants to read through thousands of long e-mails. ;)
