Video: Chevy Volt Hits The Track, Impresses The Hell Out Of Us

After bombarding the media with an overflow of official press images, video footage of the production Chevy Volt hitting the streets has finally found its way to the web. Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” musical accompaniment notwithstanding, actually seeing the Chevy Volt in motion effectively quieted all the bitching and moaning we’ve done about the Volt’s unimpressive design.

Video footage after the jump

Despite the fact that I doubt it ever peaked past 45mph, watching the Chevy Volt complete a lap on the track was, as corny as this may sound, a very humbling experience. Yes, we’ve read GM the riot act a countless number of times for the numerous discrepancies between the concept and production model Volts, but at the end of the day, we respectfully remove our hats in your presence, GM - 100 years and still firmly planted on the forefront of engineering.

Opel/Vauxhall Insignia Named 2009 European Car of the Year

The news has been pretty grim over at GM the past few weeks, but one thing the automaker can celebrate is that the 2009 Opel/ Vauxhall Insignia has been named the 2009 European Car of the Year.

The Insignia achieved the award by a mere one point (321) over the 2nd place finisher, the Ford Fiesta (320). The bronze winner was the VW Golf with 223 points. This is the first win for the Opel brand in 22 years.

Tear in my beer: GM reportedly kills off 2010 Pontiac G8 ST

Click above for high-res gallery of the Pontiac G8 ST

Hold on to your Budweiser coozies: Details are scarce at the moment, but Pickuptruck.com is reporting that Pontiac has quietly euthanized plans to introduce the 2010 Pontiac G8 ST. The muscular G8-based trucklet was to signal the re-emergence of the unibody pickup in North America, a genre once populated with vehicles like the Chevrolet El Camino and Ford Ranchero, along with smaller front-drive moppets like the Volkswagen Rabbit pickup and Dodge Rampage.

The Austrailian-built rear-drive G8 ST was to arrive with V8 power, a 74-inch cargo hold, and a 3500-pound towing capacity, making it less capable than full-size body-on-frame pickups like General Motors' own Silverado/GMC Sierra twins, with the predicted trade-off of markedly better handling and fuel economy.

The ST was to launch as a 2010 model later this year, and prices were rumored to start in the low $30k range. Although we are unsurprised to learn of the truck's cancellation (as GM is actively slimming down its portfolio and the baby muscle pickup was expected to serve as a small-volume niche model), we can't help but get a little misty-eyed at the loss of what promised to be a truly epic donut-making machine. G8 ST, we hardly knew ye...

Relationship Update: GM Spotted Getting Cozy With Tata, Betraying Pregnant HUMMER

After a brief reconciliation in anticipation of the birth of their new child, the HUMMER H4, our favorite dysfunctional industry couple, GM and HUMMER, are again on the outs. According to Auto News, GM has reported an “abysmal” tally for 2008 of only 14 million total HUMMER units sold, down 2 million from last year, and is once again anxiously trying to divorce HUMMER. After approaching auto manufacturers in both Russia and China only to be met with a closed door, GM is now groveling at the feet of Indian company Tata Motors.

Today’s news of GM’s renewed desire to rid itself of HUMMER follows on the heels of last week’s news that GM plans to invest $200 million in a powertrain plant in India. Scandalous news given GM’s public lamentations of severe financial hardship, GM insists that the new plans are purely an extension of GM’s long-term goal to compete in the global market as opposed to an incentive for Tata Motors to become HUMMER’s new sugar daddy.

If automakers get a bailout, should NASCAR die?

A columnist over at Slate.com is recommending -- and not lightly, he wants you to know -- that with the domestic automakers enduring "Detroit's version of The Troubles," now would be a good time to "euthanize" NASCAR. He makes a long argument, but the crux of it is simple: if the domestics get a heap of money from the government, should that money really be used to sponsor a specialized race series that arguably doesn't have the national pull or the return it once did? His supporting arguments are sometimes disingenuous and occasionally slightly off-base, but the question is worth considering. If the public loans money to the automakers, who decides where that money is spent? Yet, if Ford, GM, and Chrysler were to do the same thing to NASCAR that Honda, Suzuki, Audi, and Subaru have been doing, well... that would leave NASCAR as a one-make series featuring, ta-da, Toyota. And wouldn't that be something to see? Thanks for the tip, Josh!

What are the Most Lustable New Cars for 2008?

It seems impossible to fathom that I am the only perpetual car shopper who is always looking for that next fun auto. While there may be many who do not consider themselves perpetual car shoppers many may believe themselves to be car aficionados or appreciators of fine autos. For those of you who, like myself, have put off the purchase of that next fun ride, as well as for those of you who appreciate the promise of the next cool auto, I have compile MY list of the Most Lustable New Cars for 2008. If you have put off buying that new car for a while these are the cars that I feel will make all the waiting worth the while. Some of these cars are still coming from their concept stage and have yet to be road tested by people outside of the manufacturers engineers, so for some their ranking is based on the Promise of what the car will be. EPA Confirms 20/21-mpg Fuel-Rating for GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has released their fuel-economy ratings for the new GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe vehicles for 2008 that will be utilizing GM’s new 2-Mode Hybrid System. Through GM’s own research it was determined that the dual-electric motor system within their large SUV’s reached a 40% increase in fuel-savings compared to their gasoline powered counterparts. Well the EPA’s rating system has verified that claim granting the Yukon and Tahoe 2WD Hybrid a 21-mpg rating and the 4WD Hybrid a 20-mpg rating.

These government ratings and hybrid advancement confirmation should bode well for GM and its efforts to sell their new 2-Mode Hybrid vehicles. Other GM vehicles that will or already are sharing in the new technology are the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra Crew Cab (both full size pick-ups). (more…)
