Surprise, It’s Not a Death Trap

I have been on a Fiero kick lately, wanted one since the early ’80s. I had to get it out of my system eventually so I grabbed a 2M4 that needed help for next to nothing, to kick around in, use for commutes and the occasional countryside cruise with the sunroof popped out. My wife’s reaction was that I had bought a deathtrap.

Before jumping in I researched the hell out of Fieros. I remembered the fires and recalls long ago, so I wanted to know all I could before buying one. A LOT of interesting info was uncovered while Googling Fieros, but most importantly Pontiac made the cabin’s structural integrity a priority. They employed a space frame cabin design that offered unprecedented protection for a car of its size. According to Consumer Reports, the only car rated safer was the Volvo DL.

I have also read and watched accounts of the protection Fieros have given when all went wrong. Of course, no car can keep you safe in every scenario and Fieros are small and still vulnerable depending on the circumstances, but this video I found is impressive when you think of how such a small car could have kept its occupant on this side of the soil.

AMG Boss: "The horsepower wars are over."

Click above for a high-res image gallery of the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series

That's the way it goes with fashion: it's on the runway in Paris in March and in a bucket at Big Lots by September. Mercedes-Benz' in-house tuning arm, AMG, has decided to turn with the popular tide and call time on horsepower brinkmanship, with the division boss saying, "We are going to use other ways to extract better performance, including weight saving, engine optimization and alternative technologies."

What's the new fashion? Getting the most out of the least. AMG is going to do that by losing weight, installing tech like the SL63 AMG's wet clutch gearbox on the coming E63 AMG, and possibly re-engineering Mercedes' diesel, hybrid, and four-cylinder engines for AMG duty.

Not too long ago, imagining an A-Class AMG would have been beyond comprehension, but this is the future. We just hope everyone has thought through the consequences: with the reins being pulled on increasingly powerful motors, this is going to put a lot of horses out of work. And that makes the possibility of an equine industry bailout something we can't rule out...

Geneva 09' Preview: BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo Unveiled

bmw_5series_gt_concept.jpg
BMW is out to create another vehicle that no one has yet to ask for with its 5 Series Gran Turismo Concept, which BMW refers to as a Progressive Activity Sedan.

The concept is neither a sedan, wagon or SUV, instead its a combination of all three vehicles. It's overall shape is similar to the X6, but with a lower ride height. One interesting feature is the two-piece double-jointed tailgate. Just like the X6, the Concept only has room for 4 passengers.

Just like past BMW's concepts, the production model is expected to be very close to what we see here and is expected to be released sometime in 2010.

French Hooligans Burn 1,147 Cars To Celebrate New Year [News]

Sacré bleu! The French Interior Ministry is reporting the country's emerging New Year's Eve pastime of burning cars for fun has resulted in 1,147 torched automobiles, up 30.64% from last year.

Police arrested 288 people during the "festivities," a number also up from last year's 259 arrests. As a result of his 35,000-strong nationwide police force being incapable of maintaining order, model-marrying French President Nicolas Sarkozy is suggesting those minors convicted of setting cars on fire be stripped of their licenses until they pay back the damages caused by their actions. Since most of these people are youths and France has a pretty strong public transit system, we're assuming this plan will have a huge impact on next year's shenanigans. Video: Chevy Volt Hits The Track, Impresses The Hell Out Of Us

After bombarding the media with an overflow of official press images, video footage of the production Chevy Volt hitting the streets has finally found its way to the web. Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” musical accompaniment notwithstanding, actually seeing the Chevy Volt in motion effectively quieted all the bitching and moaning we’ve done about the Volt’s unimpressive design.

Video footage after the jump

Despite the fact that I doubt it ever peaked past 45mph, watching the Chevy Volt complete a lap on the track was, as corny as this may sound, a very humbling experience. Yes, we’ve read GM the riot act a countless number of times for the numerous discrepancies between the concept and production model Volts, but at the end of the day, we respectfully remove our hats in your presence, GM - 100 years and still firmly planted on the forefront of engineering.

Rumors are False... Suzuki Kizashi is Not Dead

Earlier this week reports surfaced that Suzuki had killed the Kizashi midsize sedan that was supposed to be released later this year. Now Suzuki has answered those reports by stating that they are false.

“The production version will debut at this year’s New York auto show in April,” Jeff Holland, spokesman for American Suzuki Motor Corp., told Automotive News.

The car and all its official details will be unveiled at that time.

At least one of the vehicles that were rumored to being killed is untrue. Now if only those reports that came out yesterday from Honda were only untrue as well...

It was already reported that Honda has killed the next-gen Acura NSX, but it looks like the economic downturn is causing Honda to cut even more programs.

Autocar is now reporting that in addition to the death of the NSX, Honda has also killed the next-gen S2000. 2009 is reportedly going to be the last model year for the S2000 with no replacement in the works. Scuderia Ferrari to bring back troubled pit-lane traffic lights system

Sometimes the best approach is the simplest, but that kind of attitude doesn't always fly in the high-tech haven that is Ferrari's headquarters in Maranello. Traditionally, one pit crew member would stand beside a Formula One car in the pit lane box holding a small sign on a long shaft to signal the driver when it was safe to drive out, but Scuderia Ferrari tried last year to replace the "lollipop" sign with an electronic system. A small box with lights, controlled by computer, was implemented in an effort to streamline the process. Unfortunately, the progress proved anything but, and the system caused several costly errors this past season, culminating in the inaugural nighttime Singapore GP, where Felipe Massa was signaled to leave the pit before the refueling hose was detached. With his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen waiting behind, Massa drove off, dragging the fuel line - and a crew member -along with him.

The incident cost the Massa and Ferrari dearly, and they ended up losing out on the Drivers' Title. The electronic system was subsequently abandoned and in favor of the simpler lollipop. Undeterred and determined to get it right, however, Ferrari reckon they've learned from their mistakes. During the off-season, they have been hard at work on the system and are planning on bringing it back for the 2009 championship. For the sake of the entire team - especially the guy who has the precarious job of holding the fuel nozzle - we hope they've got it right this time.

Squirrels Of Fury Scirocco Ventilates Engine Block, Goes Out In Blaze Of Glory [24 Hours Of Lemons]

We're in the final hour of racing here at Thunderhill, and we can't say who the favorite is at this point. What we can tell you is that oil-coated VWs burn really well.

Here's the scene under the hood of the Squirrels Of Fury car. Oh sure, you've seen LeMons cars with holes in the engine block before, but the Squirrels take it to a new level...

Yes, that's a flashlight shining all the way through the block. The car had been leaking oil for quite a while, so the engine compartment and underside were thoroughly coated. When Mr. Connecting Rod finally decided he'd had enough, the resulting blast of hot flying metal and combustion gases set the oil alight.

Many thanks to Zandr Milewski of Team Dead Smurfs for the unspeakably amazing burning-VW photographs!
